Mutation induction of Williams banana for salt tolerance through tissue culture using gamma rays at doses 0, 2 krad once, 2 krad twice and 4 krad was studied. Morphological changes after irradiation were leaf shape, leaf thickness, number of shoot, albino shoot and abnormal leaf arrangement. Growth of banana decreased when increasing doses of gamma rays. Mortality percentages within 3 months of irradiated banana with gamma rays at doses 2 krad once, 2 krad twice and 4 krad were 9.01, 28.30 and 66.67 respectively. Only treatment of 2 krad twice was used for salt tolerance selection. Banana plantlets were cultured in Murashige and Skoog media with 15 percent coconut water and 5 ppm 6-benzylaminopurine and with addition of 0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 and 2 percent sodium chloride. Mortality percentages after 2 months were 0, 0, 16.67, 100 and 100 respectively. Growth of banana was slow in media containing sodium chloride. Increasing sodium chloride concentration in media at each subculture resulted in better growth than using constant sodium chloride level. Growth of banana was stopped in media with high concentration of sodium chloride. From this experiment, 0.4 percent sodium chloride tolerant Williams banana was selected.
