Pest populations are limited by a complex of factors, whereby natural antagonists exert in different ways an important influence on the population dynamics of cereal aphids. During the period from 1983 to 1985 it was tried to improve the knowledge on side effects of reduced dosages (1/2, 1/4 and 1/8) of the 1983 recommended dose rate of Pirimor (ICI: 300 g/ha), Metasystox R (Bayer AG: 800 ml/ha) and of a test substance (Bayer AG: 250 g/ha) on cereal aphids and aphid specific predators. By reducing the efficiency of insecticidal treatments more aphids should survive and save as essential food source for beneficial arthropods. By the use of reduced concentrations up to 1/4 of the recommended dosage more than 90 per cent of the aphids were killed. Surviving ladybirds, hoverflies and green lacewing were most numerous in the treatments with 1/4 and 1/8 of the recommended dosage. Pirimor showed the highest selectivity. Due to ecological and economic factors treatment with reduced insecticide dosages seems to be an appropriate method for the integrated pest management of cereal aphids.
