Static bioassay tests were conducted to determine acute toxicity of saponin to five sizes of giant fresh water prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man) and three fresh water fishes of following species; Ophicephalus striatus Bloch, Tilapia nilotica Linn., Esomus metallicus Ahl. The toxicity was measured in term of median lethal concentration (LC50) and median lethal time (LT50). The 24 hour LC50 of the prawn, size (1) to size (5) were 257.00, 148.00, 108.00, 40.70 and 22.50 ppm, respectively. The larger prawn is more sensitive to saponin than the smaller one. The 24 hour LC50 of the fish were as follows; O. striatus (7.80 ppm), T. nilotica (3.95 ppm) and E. metallicus (7.15ppm). The 24 hour LC50 of all sizes of the prawn were higher than those of the fish. The LT50 also agreed well with the LC50. It was concluded that concentrations of saponin lethal to tested fishes were not lethal to prawn which were used in this experiment. Persistence of saponin toxicity at elapsed time of application was also investigated using T. nilotica, and results showed that at lower concentrations of saponin the residual effects rapidly disappeared.
