Automated mapping of rice paddies using multitemporal MODIS images

Rice is the staple food of 94 million Filipinos and is cultivated almost in all provinces. Information on the exact location, extent and crop yield in those areas is important for developing location-specific technologies that address yield limiting factors. The authors are developing an automated system for mapping rice paddies that use multitemporal MODIS sensor satellite images. MODIS images are freely available. The temporal resolution is about one day, and they have a spatial resolution of 500 meters. The authors are processing 8-day MODIS composite images using the software they developed for the 'R' environment, an open source statistical software package. Preliminary results for the Philippines show high correlations with official provincial rice area statistics: 0.94 for Luzon, 0.82 for Mindanao and 0.70 for Visayas. In addition to generating a rice area map, the authors will also generate information on rice cropping intensity, cropping pattern, and estimated dates of flooding, transplanting and harvesting. When fully validated, IRRI will make this automated rice mapping system accessible to national agricultural research systems (NARS) partners as a contribution to their rice monitoring programs.
