Profile of Private and Financial Sector Activities of the World Bank in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Successful private, financial, and banking sector reform is essential for the transition of the formerly communist countries of Europe and Central Asia (ECA) into well functioning market economies. This report examines the workings of private and financial sector activities within the ECA Region of the World Bank. Development objectives and strategies are discussed, including current issues in the private and financial sector (including banking and securities markets). In June 1998, the World Bank had 47 active financial and private sector development projects in Europe and Central Asia, with a total commitment value of US $3.25 billion. The work program is looked at, current projects are discussed, projects under implementation are listed, and the units' reorganization is explained.
