The effect of sub lethal cadmium solutions on some ethological parameters was studied in juvenile fish (common carp, Cyprinus carpio). It was studied the effect of the metal on its swimming activity and the altitudinal and lateral preferences in the aquarium. The metal caused an important depression of the swimming activity (expressed quantitatively by means of an Index of relative activity). The altitudinal preference, evaluated simultaneously, was also modified: fish were most of time in the surface layer of the aquarium. As for the lateral preference the most important result was the evidence that the fish avoided the section of the aquarium where Cadmium solutions were dripping, without a particular pattern of distribution in the rest of the aquarium. The changes described in the first two parameters went reversible since when exposing fish to clean media (fresh water), they returned to values comparable with those registered in the control period
