This report suggests that short term control can be effected by raising the pH of the sea water and thereby retaining any hydrogen sulfide in the ballast water. A pH of 9.5 to 10.0 is advisable and could be attained by the addition of one pound of sodium hydroxide per 1,000 gallons of water used for gasoline displacement.
