Study on the bud borer pests on damask rose in Kashan region

In this study two bud borer pests were collected and identified on damask rose. 1- Eucnaemidophorus rhododaetylus Den. & Schiff. (Lep., Pterophoridae) 2- Notocelia roborana III. (Lep., Tortricidae) This is the first record of both species for Iran fauna. The pests make their feeding nests by spinning silk treads and feed on buds and flowers inside nests. Therefore, they reduce the flowers number and amount of perfume and essence. Recently, population of the first species has increased in some regions, such as Barzok (in Kashan City), and it becomes the key pest in rose fields. Biology and growth characters of the pest were studied by regular inspections from different rose fields. Longevity of adults and egg-laying capacity of females was studied using net sleeves. To study hibernation of the pest samples of soil, debris, and bush foliage were inspected in laboratory. The study showed that the pest feeds on only rose ( Rosa spp.) hushes. The highest and lowest rates of infection and damage were 33.75 and 1.14 % and belonged to the rose fields of Barzok and Ghamsar, respectively. The pest is univoltine, while most of its life cycle, 8-9 months, passed as first instar larvae in diapause under cockle. Diapause takes from June to early April and larvae renewed their activity when the rose bushes restart their growth. Period of different growth stages under field conditions on average are as follow: egg 10- 15 days, larva 55-65 days, pupa 10 days, and adult 5-25 days.
