Conservation and sustainable development of orchids in Thailand

Thailand is situated in a hot and humid tropical zone of Southeast Asia and is the 13th most plant-rich country in the world. It is estimated that there are approximately 15,000 plant species of which about 1,100 are orchids. Deforestation and over-collection of wild Thai orchids for trade has placed orchid species at a risk of extinction. The genus Paphiopedilum, Vanda coerulea and Dendrobium cruentum are now included in Appendix I of CITES. Various methods of in situ and ex situ conservation (living collection, seed banks and pollen banks) of orchids are being implemented by the government, institutions and the private sectors. Sustainable development of orchids for both species and hybrids is successful. Further research, extension and technology application for more effective breeding, asexual propagation, tissue culture, cultivation, postharvest handling, transport and their application to the orchid trade are being developed. Conservation and sustainable development of orchids in Thailand will be a complete success if the people, and the public and private sectors cooperate with each other.
