Flower induction in pummelo using paclobutrazol

The study was conducted at Mawab, Compostela Valley Province from September 2011 to August 2012 using 13-year old 'Magallanes' pummelo trees. The pummelo trees did not flower yet and were unproductive for the two years duration under the Science and Technology-Based Farming (STBF) project. The study therefore aimed to: a) investigate the effect of Paclobutrazol (PBZ) application on the flushing, flowering characteristics, fruit set and yield of pummelo; and b) determine the effective level of PBZ application in inducing flowering of pummelo. There were five treatments replicated three times with two sample trees per replicate laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The treatments were: T1-Control; T2-Recommended Rate (RR) of PBZ; T3-150% RR of PBZ; T4-175% of RR PBZ; T5-200% of RR PBZ. Data gathered were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and means were compared using Honest Significant Difference (HSD). Results of the study revealed that pummelo trees applied with PBZ had higher number of flushes, flowers, fruits and yield. It was also observed that all trees, applied with the RR level of PBZ flowered earlier among treatments. Hence, the RR of PBZ effectively induced the flowering and increased the yield of 'Magallanes' pummelo trees.
