Risks of Growing Sugar Beet on Land Endangered by Erosion

In 2013-2014, samplings were carried out on chernozem loamy soils endangered by water erosion. For this purpose, soil samples were collected from 15 sites - always from the top of the hill, from the hillside, and from the foothill. The samples were collected from the surface soil (0-0.30 m) and from the subsoil (0.30-0.60 m) in order to determine selected physical properties: volume density, total porosity and pore size distribution. The effect of water erosion was evident even during the site inspections when shift of soil particles into foothills of land was observed. The measured values of volume density and total porosity indicate soil compaction in the subsoil, where critical limit is exceeded in samples collected from all positions. Critical limits in the surface soil were only exceeded in foothills, where accumulation of soil occurs. Ratios of pore size show that the most sensitive reaction to compaction can be found in non-capillary pores. In terms of soil compaction, the foothill positions have shown the worst results. The difference of volume density and total porosity between the upper and lower parts of the slope is statistically significant. Hence, the influence of water erosion on soil compaction is statistically confirmed.
