Traditionally grown in the Philippines as food, the high demand in the feed industry has increasingly made cassava a popular crop to rival yellow corn in importance. Unlike yellow corn, cassava is widely grown marginally or with minimal fertilizer in pest despite the availability of a national fertilizer recommendation (NFR) for cassava of 8 bags 14-14-14 per ha. This study aims to show that the site specific nutrient management (SSNM) based on 4R nutrient stewardship (right source, right amount, right time and right place) is better than using the national fertilizer recommendation for cassava. Omission plot trials with four replications were done in five locations in the Philippines using local varieties. Seven fertilizer treatments were applied. These were T1 (200-150-350) for full NPK rate, T2 (0-150-350) for minus N, T3 (200-0-350) for minus P, T4 (200-150-0) for minus K, T5 for the NFR, T6 (180-70-250) for the prototype 4R recommendation rate, and T7 for the unfertilized control. For T1, T2, T3, T4 and T6, one third of the full amount of N and K and full amount of P were applied as basal fertilizer while the remainder was applied at 2.5 and 5 months after planting. Fresh root yield ranged from 33.6-39.7 t/ha in T1, 11.9-48.5 t/ha in T2, 14.0-18.6 t/ha in T3, 16.7-41.8 t/ha in T4, 20.2-31.5 t/ha in T5, 29.8-37.3 t/ha in T6 and 10.0-33.5 t/ha in T7. Fresh root yield from Full NPK and the prototype 47 recommended rate did not differ significantly but the prototype 4R recommended rate surpassed the yield of NFR by 21% and that of the unfertilized control by 53%. Results from this study are essential in developing a reliable Nutrient Expert sup R Cassava, a tool to help cassava stakeholders to implement 4R-nutrient management for increasing cassava production.
