The Latvian Ardennes is an endangered draft horse breed historically bred in Latvia. The main criteria for the admission of the horses to the breeding programme for preservation of breed were the type of horses and origin (including pedigree information). The aim of the study was to analyse phenotypic traits, adequacy to the type and the implementation of the breeding programme. The number of Latvian Ardennes is critical – only four licensed stallions and 14 mares conformed to preservation. The data consist of the following measurements: height at withers, chest circumference and cannon bone circumference, performance testing results in points. The most characteristic conformation traits of Latvian Ardennes are a massive body, proportional head, sloped croup, conceived back line. Average measurements of stallions admitted to the breeding programme were 157.25±6.4 cm for the height at withers, 213.75±5.54 cm for the chest circumference, 25.63±1.03 cm for the cannon bone circumference, boniness index 16.31±0.47%, the massivity index 136.47±5.73%. Average measurements of stallions admitted to the breeding programme were 157.25±6.4 cm for the height at withers, 213.75±5.54 cm for the chest circumference, 25.63±1.03 cm for the cannon bone circumference, the boniness index 16.31±0.47%, the massivity index 136.47±5.73%. Average measurements of mares were 155.85±5.37 cm for the height at withers, 211.31±7.04 cm for the chest circumference, 23.76±0.37 cm for the cannon bone circumference, the boniness index 15.23±0.17%, the massivity index 134.89±0.96%. In general, the population conformed to requirements of the breeding programme. The phenotype was uneven in population because performance testing results and the height at withers were significantly higher in the progeny group of the sire Maksis (p is less than 0.05). The progeny of Maksis in population was 28%.
