Narrow genetic base coupled withlow levels of resistance against importantbiotic/abiotic stresses in cultivatedpigeonpea is the major constraint affectingits production and productivity globally.Wild Cajanus species are the reservoir ofmany important genes and can be utilized toimprove the crop cultivars, enrich variability,and broaden the genetic base. Pre-breedingpopulations involving wild Cajanus speciesfrom the secondary and tertiary genepools asdonors and pigeonpea cultivars as recipientshave been developed. Considerablevariability was observed in these populationsfor morpho-agronomic traits and for bioticstresses. Agronomically desirable and diseaseresistant introgression lines have beenidentified for use in pigeonpea improvementprograms
