Французский. La forêt méditerranéenne est remarquablement adaptée à deux perturbations qui l'ont façonnée depuis des millénaires : la sécheresse et l'incendie. Cependant depuis le début du 20ème siècle, le changement climatique modifie progressivement l'équilibre établi entre la végétation, le sol et le climat. Grâce à l'allongement de la saison de végétation, à l'amélioration progressive des sols et au taux croissant de CO2, la productivité des écosystèmes méditerranéens s'est accrue dans de fortes proportions, sauf pour les espèces situées en limite inférieure de leur aire de répartition. Ainsi le pin d'Alep a gagné près de 40% en hauteur et presque doublé sa productivité, confirmant la tendance générale observée chez les essences forestières de tout l'hémisphère nord. A l'inverse, le pin sylvestre voyait sa productivité chuter fortement. Depuis la fin des années 90, la répétition de grandes sécheresses et de canicules semblent avoir franchi un seuil critique. La croissance du pin d'Alep a ralenti, son état sanitaire s'est dégradé avec des pertes importantes de surface foliaire et une réduction forte de la taille des aiguilles. Des dépérissements massifs se produisent dans les peuplements de pin sylvestre, mais aussi chez d'autres espèces arborées ou arbustives dont certaines sont pourtant bien adaptées au climat méditerranéen, de la côte jusqu'à 1500 m d'altitude. Le chêne liège est très touché dans les zones incendiées récemment, ainsi que le chêne blanc. La baisse de productivité végétale s'accompagne d'une réduction des apports de matière organique au sol. La sécheresse ralentit la dégradation des litières, qui de plus tombent de façon irrégulière au gré des épisodes de stress hydrique. Après incendie, l'activité biologique intense permet normalement une reconstitution rapide du fonctionnement des sols. Mais les sécheresses répétées empêchent cette activité une grande partie du printemps et de l'automne. Ce ralentissement d'activité touche particulièrement des espèces clefs du fonctionnement du sol comme les bactéries et les vers de terre, et menace la biodiversité de la microfaune et des champignons. Les légumineuses, qui permettent une reconstitution des stocks d'azote après incendie, sont parmi les végétaux les plus touchés par les dépérissements. Exposés plus longtemps à la pluie et au soleil, les sols sont moins rapidement enrichis en matière organique, se reconstituent mal après incendie et s'érode plus. La baisse de fertilité ainsi engendrée s'ajoute pour la végétation aux stress climatique, et un cercle vicieux s'enclenche. L'interaction entre incendie et changement climatique constitue une menace grave pour les écosystèmes méditerranéens.

Английский. The Mediterranean forest is strikingly adapted to two disturbances which shaped her since millenniums: drought and fire. However since the beginning of the 20th century, climate change modifies gradually the balance established between the vegetation, the soil and the climate. Thanks to a longer growing season, to the progressive improvement of soils and to the increasing rate of CO2, the productivity of Mediterranean ecosystems sharply increased, except for species situated at the lower limit of their distribution area. So Pinus halepensis gained about 40 % in height and almost doubled its productivity, confirming the general tendency observed for forest trees in the northern hemisphere. On the contrary, Pinus silvestris productivity decreased strongly. Since the end of the 90s, the repetition of droughts and scorching heats seems to have passed a critical threshold. The growth of Pinus halepensis slowed down, its health status degraded with important losses of leaf area and a strong reduction of the size of leaves. Extensive dieback occured in the Pinus silvestris stands, but also for other tree or shrub species adapted to the Mediterranean climate, from the coast until the altitude of 1500 m. The cork oak is particularly endangered in the recently burned areas, as well as Quercus pubescens. The decline of vegetation productivity leads to a reduction of its contribution to soil organic matter. The drought slows down the degradation of litter, which furthermore falls irregularly in time according to the episodes of water stress. After fire, the intense biological activity normally allows a fast recovery of soil functioning. But the repeated droughts prevent this activity during most of spring and autumn. This low activity particularly strikes key-species of soil functioning as the bacteria and the earthworms, and threatens the biodiversity of the microfauna and the fungus. Legumes, which allow a refilling of nitrogen stocks after fire, are among plants the most touched by the dieback. Exposed much longer to the rain and to the sun, soils are slower enriched in organic matter, recover incompletely after fire and are more eroded. Such a decline of fertility adds to the climatic stress for the vegetation in a vicious circle. The interaction between fire and climate change is threatening Mediterranean ecosystems.
