With increase in food grain production in India from 50.8 million tonnes in 1950-51 to 241.57 million tonnes in 2010-2011, the production and consumption of phosphorus fertilizer has also increased from 9.8 thousand tonnes in 1950-51 to 4371 thousand tonnes in 2010-2011 and from 6.9 thousand tonnes in 1950-51 to 8,049 thousand tonnes in 2010-2011, respectively. Phosphorus is the second important primary nutrient element after nitrogen. Phosphorus is the least mobile major nutrient in soils and the prime limiting factor for plant growth.
