The effect of initial thrips density (Thrips tabaci Lind. (Thysanoptera, Thripidae)) on the control exerted by Amblyseius barkeri Hughes (Acarina, Phytoseiidae) on glasshouse cucumber
1989
Stengaard Hansen, L. (National Research Centre for Plant Protection, Lyngby (Denmark))
The predatory mite Amblyseius barkeri successfully controlled Thrips tabaci on cucumber in 9 commercial glasshouses. Initial thrips densities (= percentage infested plants at the time of 1st predator introduction) ranged from 3 per cent to over 35 per cent. In 4 other glasshouses, control was unsatisfactory. Predators established successfully in all 13 glasshouses, and peak predator densities were not different in the glasshouses with unsatisfactory control. The reason for the different control results may be found in the increase rates of thrips
