"Grasserie" and "Pebrine": two historically notorious diseases of the silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) again disastrous

Recently, commercial silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) rearings in Northern Italy are suffering from severe losses by larval mortalities. Diagnostic investigations on diseased silkworms revealed massive infections by the nuclear polyhedrosis virus (Baculovirus), the causative agent of "grasserie", as well as, to a minor extent, by Nosema bombycis, the well-known microsporidan pathogen causing "Pebrine". Essential signs of both diseases are described together with historical data. The necessity for sanitary attendance of silkworm rearings is underlined
