Secondary degenerative arthropathy (osteoarthrosis) of the hip joints in ageing, free-living koalas. [Short contribution]

Hip joints from 81 free-living and 12 captive koalas were examined at necropsy from 1990 to 1992. The hip joints of the 12 captive koalas showed no changes. Of the free-living koalas, 11 had unilateral detachment and 35 had bilateral detachment of the round ligaments from the fovea capitis of the femoral head. The results suggest that this condition develops because of the behaviour of free-living koalas.
