Hereford steers in a controlled environment simulating high summer temperatures and fed a diet of hay and barley grain contaminated with ergots displayed elevated rectal temperature and other signs of hyperthermia each afternoon within a week. The symptoms were relieved overnight, and disappeared within a week of ceasing to feed the ergots.
