Acute interstitial pneumonia in cattle associated with consumption of mould-damaged sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) [first case report; Queensland]. [Short contribution]

The first report is recorded of the occurrence of acute interstitial pneumonia in Australia in cattle after eating mouldy sweet potatoes. A herd of 11 Brahman steers consumed the tubers for 2 weeks without apparent effect, until 1 died and 4 others developed laboured abdominal breathing over the following 3-4 days. The clinical, necropsy and histological findings were similar to reports from cases in north America. The findings suggested that pneumotoxic factors present in the mould-damaged tubers were responsible.
