A positive association between resistance to ovine footrot [sheep] and particular lymphocyte antigen types

The distribution of 12 Class I ovine lymphocyte antigens was examined in 4 flocks of sheep vaccinated against and/or challenged with Bacteroides nodosus. In New Zealand, a higher frequency of OLA type SY6 was found in Corriedales bred for footrot resistance; in Victoria with Merinos, SYlb was associated with a low incidence of severe footrot, and SY6 with high vaccinal agglutinin titres; in an outbreak in New South Wales, SY6 and SYlb were again associated with low infection. It is suggested that OLA SY6 is associated with responsiveness to vaccination, and SYlb with resistance to footrot.
