The distribution and conservation status of Queensland freshwater fishes

Queensland has the greatest diversity of freshwater fish species in Australia. Approximately sixty-five percent of Australian freshwater species, representing thirty-seven families, are found in Queensland. This can be attributed to Queensland encompassing tropical, temperate and arid climates, and being a region of overlap for southern and northern faunal assemblages. The Queensland Department of Primary Industries, Fisheries Division, recognises the need for management strategies reflecting this diversity. However, specific information vital to the management of freshwater fishes and habitats has not been available. In this report the distribution and conservation status of Queensland freshwater fishes is documented. This represents the first step in compiling specific biological requirements for individual species.
