Pathogens are potent selective forces; even in situations where they have been associated with the host for long periods of time they affect host fitness by reducing fecundity and increasing mortality either directly or indirectly by reducing competitiveness. On a broad geographic scale, race-specific resistance occurs more frequently in regions favourable to disease development. Within such areas, however, the distribution of resistant genotypes is often very patchy. At a demographic level, pathogen-induced reductions in host fitness may lead to changes in the size of populations, and in turn, changes in the relative diversity of whole communities.
