Groups of ewes in early pregnancy were dispatched from a flock with similar genetic and environmental background to 14 commercial flocks. At three months of age, the offspring were collected to run together under favourable conditions. Wide variation in liveweight attributable to the effects of the pre-weaning environment was found.
