Experiment of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and eboni (Diospyros celebica) plantation at 4 spacings of intercropped Leucaena leucocephala

A research on mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and eboni (Diospyros celebica) plantation under four spacing of intercropped Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) has been conducted since February 1985 in research station at Kalitabu, Tanjung Bintang, Lampung Province. Leucaena was established on February 1985 with four spacings of 1 m x 2 m, 1 m x 3 m, 1 m x 4 m, and 2 m x 3 m. Mahogany and eboni were planted at spacing of 2 m x 3 m and 2 m x 2 m respectively when the Leucaena plantation was 16 months old. A two factor randomized complete block design with three replications was used in this experiment. To examine the relationship between the diameter and height of mahogany and eboni at the age of three months, linear regression was employed. This experiment showed that the survival percentages of three month old mahogany and eboni are 90.91 percent and 95,12 percent. Average height and diameter of mahogany are 31.57 cm and 0.49 cm while the average height and diameter of eboni are 16.64 cm and 0.28. The linear regression equation of diameter (X) regressed on height (Y) for mahogany and eboni are Y = 10.45 + 43.36 X, r = 0,88 and Y = 3.56 + 46.54 X, r = 0.66. Mahogany and eboni grown under four spacings of Leucaena showed no significant growth difference. Since the results as obtained above are still on the first phase of investigation, it is needed to examine mahogany and eboni growth under such system in the future.
