Strain variation in the killing of staphylococci by avian heterophils [chickens]. [Short contribution]

A bacterial assay using chicken heterophils was developed to study the virulence of 4 strains of staphylococci: 2 pathogenic strains and 2 non-pathogenic. The results showed a significant decrease in the survival of non-pathogenic S. aureus compared with the other strains in bactericidal assays in which normal chicken serum (NCS) was excluded, whereas the non-pathogenic S. hyicus showed no decrease. In assays that included NCS, all 4 strains sustained reductions in survival. The results indicate that there is strain variation in the susceptibility of staphylococci to killing by heterophils of peripheral blood origin of chickens.
