Laboratory experiments showed that acidic tailings produced at Ranger Uranium Mine, Northern Territory have an inherent capacity for partial neutralization, due to the presence of chloritic minerals. During pH increase, hydroxy compounds of iron and aluminium precipitate, and these act as scavengers for heavy metals. Acidic tailings have advantages over limed tailings, being easier to handle and having a lower salt level. Magnesium oxide is just as effective as lime in neutralizing acidic tailings in terms of precipitation of hydroxy compounds and retention of heavy metals, but results in higher salt concentrations in porewaters
