(Characteristics of eco-systems)

Английский. A definition of the term "ecosystem" is given and the special qualities of living systems as autopoietic systems and their relations to ecological systems are emphasized. Furtheron, the controversial conceptions about ecosystems as "actual building blocks of nature" or, instead, mental constructs by man arc discussed. It is concluded that the results of many empirical studies may be interpreted as evidence that ecosystems are systems in the sense of physics. Ecosystem analysis requires the formulation of hypotheses which are represented as simplified models. The following qualities of ecosystems are discussed: scale variance and hierarclly, diversity, succession and persistence. Different stability concepts are distinguished, and it is stressed that different spatial and temporal scales have to be considered when discussing "the stability" of an ecosystem. The same applies to the possibility of predicting the future tehavioul- of ecosystems. In this latter case there are unreducible uncertainties due to the great number of indirect effects in ecosystems and to the environmental stochasticity. Having in mind the general aim to keep the biosphere habitable for men, and being aware of the qualities of ecological systems disturballce of ecosystems has to be minimized. Instead, the inherent potential of used ecosystems for internal regulation of ecological processes has to be promoted.

Немецкий. lm Anschluss an eine Definition des Begriffs "System" werden die Besonderheiten lebender, autopoietischer Systeme und ihr Zusammenhang mit oekologischen Systemen dargestellt. Kontroverse Vorstellungen ueber Realitaet oder Modellcharakter von Oekosystemen werden referiert. Die Frage, ob die Natur aus (Oeko-)Systemen aufgebaut ist oder nur so gedacht wird, kann offen bleiben. Die Ergebnisse zahlreicher empirischer Untersuchungen koennen zumindest als Beleg dafuer interpretiert werden, dass Oekosysteme Systeme im physikalischen Sinn sind. Die Analyse von Oekosystemen erfordert die Formulierung von Hypothesen, die in Form von vereinfachten System-Modellen dargestellt werden. Als spezifische Eigenschaften von Oekosystemen werden herausgestellt und erlaeutert: Skalenvarianz und Hierarchie, Diversitaet, Persistenz und Sukzession. Verschiedene Stabilitaetskonzepte werden unterschieden und es wird betont, dass fuer eine Stabilitaetsbeurteilung die Beruecksichtigung der raeumlichen und zeitlichen Skalenvarianz von Oekosystemen unerlaesslich ist. Dies gilt auch fuer die Moeglichkeit, zukuenftiges Verhalten von Oekosystemen zu prognostizieren. Hier besteht auf jeden Fall eine nicht reduzierbare Unsicherheit, die u. a. auf der grossen Menge indirekter Effekte in einem Oekosystem und der generellen Umweltstochastizitaet beruht
