The Farm Management Extension Initiative was one of the responses of the Western Australian Department of Agriculture to the downturn in the agricultural industry, brought about by a number of dry years and falling commodity prices. It aimed at improving farm management practices, particularly in the areas suffering most from the depression in income. The Initiative's emphasis was improved resource allocation by the use of various computer models that could be run in group discussions and on-farm in a one-to-one consultation with the farmer and an experienced adviser. To achieve this goal, it had to cover new ground in terms of farm finance, and managerial as well as computing skills. The main steps taken are summarised.
