Inhibitory effect of citrus fruit essential oil components on Penicillium italicum and P. digitatum

Essential oils, which are present in the flavedo of citrus fruits in high quantities, can exert an important bioregulatory action on the fungal spores of the two most dangerous post-harvest pathogens of citrus fruit, namely Penicillium digitatum (Pers.) Sacc. and Penicillium italicum Wehm.. As a part of a screening survey aimed at investigating the bioregulatory action of citrus fruit essential oils, an in vitro study was conducted to determine the activity of citrus fruit essential oil components (nonanal, citral, alpha-pinene, myrcene, alpha-phellandrene and d-limonene) on the germination of P. digitatum and P. italicum spores. The tests were carried out by adding a number of amounts (1000, 500, 250, 125 ppm) of the various compounds to sucrose agar. The most active compound, in relation to the method and to the fungal strains employed, was found to be citral which, at doses of 250 ppm, proved capable of exerting a fungistatic action on both pathogens

Gli olii essenziali, presenti nel flavedo degli agrumi in elevate quantita', possono esercitare una importante azione di bioregolazione nei confronti delle spore dei due piu' importanti patogeni post-raccolta degli agrumi: Penicillium digitatum (Pers.) Sacc. e Penicillium italicum Wehm.. Nell'ambito di indagini riguardo le azioni di bioregolazione esercitate dagli olii essenziali di agrume, e' stato condotto uno studio per determinare l'attivita' di componenti degli olii essenziali (nonanal, citral, alpha-pinene, mircene, alfa-fellandrene e d-limonene) sulla germinazione delle spore di P. digitatum e P. italicum. Le prove sono state effettuate addizionando differenti quantitativi dei composti (1000, 500, 250, 125 ppm) ad agar-saccarosio. I controlli sono stati effettuati dopo 24, 48 e 72 ore di incubazione a 20 gradi C. In relazione al metodo e ai ceppi fungini utilizzati il composto piu' attivo e' risultato citral, che a dosi di 250 ppm ha esercitato una azione fungistatica verso entrambi i patogeni
