Types of ectomycorrhizae - their taxonomy, role and application

The mycelium of mycorrhizal fungi represents the main component of forest ecosystems which links forest trees, ground vegetation and decomposers in forest soils. The species diversity and occurrence of mycorrhizal fungi can change at different sucessional stages of the forest, and under the impact of different stress factors. The functional compatibility of the fungal and plant symbiont depends on fungus species, therefore its identification is essential for studies on the physiology of forest trees and the functioning of forest ecosystems. Different types of ectomycorrhizae show different morphological, anatomical and physiological characteristics. A review of the anatomical and molecular method for determination of ectomycorrhizal types is presented on a few examples of Norway spruce ectomycorrhizae from several forest sites in Slovenia. Possible perspectives of these studies within the framework of studies on biological diversity, the functioning of forest ecosystems and bioindication of forest site pollution are discussed.
