Survey of ginger growing areas in Syangja, Palpa, Gulmi and Arghaknhachi districts with special emphasis on rhizome rot disease

A survey was conducted in randomly selected eight VDCs of Syangja, Palpa, Gulmi and Arghakhanchi districts (Nepal) to identify major areas prone to rhizome rot disease and problems associated with ginger cultivation. Average holding of bari land was 11.5 ropani. Average ginger cultivated land was found to be 3.3 ropani per household. Possibility of average ginger cultivation land was found 7.9 ropani per house hold. Most of the surveyed areas were effected by the rhizome rot disease in the storage the disease caused about 4.1 Percent loss in yield. It caused an average of 24.7 percent yield loss in the field. In average farmers were cultivating Bose, Nase and local verities 43 percent, 27 percent and 30 percent respectively. Farmers were using farmed yard manure 229 kg farm yard manure per ropani. Average economically involved population found to be ranged from 3 to 5 persons. The contribution of women in ginger production 87 percent where as male contributed 13 percent. Mulch was more important for the cultivation of ginger. Average househollds 220.4 percent of farmers were using mulches. About 67 percent farmers cultivated ginger in a mixed cropping system (Maize + ginger) and 33 percent farmers cultivated as a mono crop. The price of ginger was found not stable. It varied from 11 to 37 Rs/kg between the months of November to April. The white grub infestation ranged 3 to 62 percent. Rhizome rot problem was found more in Thada (19 percent) and Jukena (26 percent) than from other locations. The contribution of income by ginger was 12 percent in total income generation of a family.
