Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) response to different irrigation water salinity levels in Mediterranean climatic conditions was investigated in a field study at the Cukurova University experimental station, Adana-Turkey during the 2001-2002 growing season. Irrigation waters of 0.5 (fresh water), 3.0, 6.0, 9.0, and 12.0 dS/m EC were used. Average grain yields ranged from 5940 to 6484 kg /ha. Variance analysis of the grain yield data showed no significantly different effect of irrigation water salinity levels on grain yields. Significant rainfall amount occurred during the wheat growing period. Generally soil salinity increased with irrigation water salinity and decreased almost linearly with increasing soil depth. The observed SAR values aren't a serious threat to wheat growth under our conditions. Saline irrigation water can safely be used for irrigating wheat in the Mediterranean region since effective winter rainfall leaches salts out of the root zone if an efficient drainage system is provided.
