Armillaria pathogenicity tests on oaks in Southern Italy [Quercus - Apulia]

Pathogenicity of four Armillaria species (A. ostoyae, A. mellea, A. gallica and A. tabescens) was investigated on seedlings and young trees of Quercus cerris, Q. frainetto, Q. ilex, Q. macrolepis, Q. pubescens and Q. trojana in the glasshouse and in the field. The inoculation was made by wounding the main root and inserting a woody inoculum previously colonised by the fungus. Data, related to the evaluation of infection extent and plant decline were collected one and four years after inoculation. The results were analysed statistically. Although A. mellea and A. gallica proved to be the most virulent species, especially on Q. macrolepis, both seedlings and young trees in most cases recovered. This result confirms the secondary role played by Armillaria in oak decline and suggests oak use for forestation without fear of serious failure due to Armillaria root rot in suitable site conditions

[La patogenicita' di quattro specie di Armillaria (A. ostoyae, A. mellea, A. gallica and A. tabescens) e' stata studiata sui semenzali e su piante giovani di Quercus cerris, Q. frainetto, Q. ilex, Q. macrolepis, Q. pubescens e Q. trojana in serra e in campo. L'inoculazione e' stata effettuata incidendo la radice principale ed inserendo un inoculo dei funghi precedentemente preparato. I dati, relativi all'evoluzione dell'infezione e del declino della pianta, sono stati raccolti uno e quattro anni dopo l'inoculazione. I risultati sono stati analizzati statisticamente. Anche se A. mellea ed A. gallica sono risultati essere le specie piu' virulente, particolarmente su Q. macrolepis, sia i semenzali, sia le piante giovani nella maggior parte dei casi hanno recuperato. Questo risultato conferma il ruolo secondario svolto da Armillaria nel declino della quercia e suggerisce l'uso della quercia per la forestazione senza timore di danni alla radice provocati da Armillaria in adatte condizioni]
