The Dipartimento di Agronomia, Selvicoltura e Gestione del territorio of Turin University has carried out a study on environmental recovery of three quarries located in the Comunita' Montana Valli Gesso, Vermenagna, Pesio (Cuneo). In the experimental trials, compost has been used in order to solve the problem of the lack of organic matter. The materials tested were: compost obtained by urban solid wastes and compost obtained by wood barks and sludge, compared with plant soil. In the environmental recovery, different mixtures of herbaceous species and autochthonous shrubs were compared. The results obtained showed the importance of using organic matters; the compost derived by wood barks and sludge was the best one; furthermore, the identification of a correct mixture of herbaceous species is very important. The importance of environmental recovery of quarries and of other decayed areas is clear, because it is rare that wild plants naturally colonize these areas in a short period of time. The modern landscape, which takes these problems into consideration, needs that, beside agronomic evaluations, also landscape and economic indexes and kind of use of old quarries and old decayed areas are considered.
