Effect of soil solarization on total Agrobacterium spp. population - inoculated Agrobacterium tumefaciens and on the development of crown gall [stone fruit plants - rootstocks - Jordan]

Two experiments were carried out in different Jordanian locations to test the effect of solarization on populations of Agrobacterium spp., including Agrobacterium tumefaciens, the crown gall agent that was inoculated in the soil, as well as on crown gall incidence. The results of these experiments showed that solarization markedly decreased the populations of three Jordanian A. tumefaciens isolates that were used as inoculum in the trials. Bacterial population reduction was correlated with temperature and soil type. Agrobacterium spp. population decreased by 99% in the first three weeks after inoculation. Lower bacterial recovery was obtained from solarized plots in the Jordan Valley (silty clay soil and temperature ranging from 39 to 51 deg C) than from the comparable treatments carried out in the uplands (clay soil and temperature ranging from 29 to 46 deg C). Solarization did not completely eliminate Agrobacterium spp. from the soil, but the number of GF677 and bitter almond rootstock seedlings with crown gall was significantly reduced in solarized plots in the Jordan Valley and uplands (by 89 and 94%, respectively) as compared with seedlings planted on non-solarized plots

[Sono stati effettuati due esperimenti in localita' diverse della Giordania per verificare l'effetto della solarizzazione sulle popolazioni di Agrobacterium spp., compreso Agrobacterium tumefaciens, l'agente del tumore batterico del colletto che era inoculato nel terreno, come sull'incidenza del tumore batterico. I risultati di questi esperimenti hanno dimostrato che la solarizzazione riduceva sensibilmente le popolazioni di tre isolati giordani di A. tumefaciens utilizzati come inoculo nelle prove. La riduzione della popolazione batterica risultava correlata con la temperatura e il tipo di terreno. La popolazione di Agrobacterium spp. e' diminuita del 99% nelle prime tre settimane dopo l'inoculazione. E' stato riscontrato un minor recupero batterico nelle parcelle solarizzate situate nella Valle del Giordano (terreno limoso argilloso e temperatura variabile da 39 a 51 gradi C) rispetto ai trattamenti analoghi effettuati nelle zone a quota piu' elevata (terreno argilloso e temperatura variabile da 29 A 46 gradi C). La solarizzazione non ha eliminato completamente Agrobacterium spp. dal terreno, ma il numero di plantule di portinnesti GF677 e mandorlo affette dal tumore batterico era ridotto significativamente nelle parcelle solarizzate nella Valle del Giordano e nelle zone a quota piu' elevata (dell'89 e del 94%, rispettivamente), rispetto alle plantule messe a dimora nelle parcelle non solarizzate]
