H. P. (Harris Perley) Gould was born at North Bridgton, Maine, on September 6, 1871. He graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. degree in 1893, and received his M.S.A. degree at Cornell University in 1897. From 1899 to 1901, he served as assistant entomologist and horticulturist at the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station. When the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) established the Bureau of Plant Industry in 1901, Gould joined the staff as assistant pomologist and was actively engaged in horticultural research and administration. He became head of the Division of Fruit and Vegetable Crops and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, and served in this position for three years until his retirement in 1941. Gould died October 17, 1946 in Washington, D.C.
