Eating and weight disorders
1983
Goodstein, Richard K.
Abstract: An authoritative text, comprised of 9 overview papers by experts in their respective fields, presents an up-to-date account of current knowledge of weight control. Two major themes are developed throughout the text: (1) that while no simple solution is yet available for those suffering from overweight and obesity and for those with related weight problems (e.g. anorexia), new research advances in weight disorder management are being developed and evaluated that promise a cautious optimism; and (2) that the contributors maintain a healthy eclecticism in their scientific perspectives and treatment recommendations. Topics include biological and psychological factors in, and surgical and behavioral treatments of, obesity treatment effectiveness in obesity behavioral therapy; the interassociation of sleeping, eating and weight disorders; and various aspects of anorexia nervosa and its treatment (hypothalamic-pituitary function and simple weight loss; reproductive hormone profiles; psychotherapy; and treatment outcomes).
