In the Tehuacan Valley, Puebla, Mexico, a harnessing system of subsoil water has been in existence since the nineteenth century, using the topography and the slopes of the land, to supply water to a number of villages; this system is known as filtering gallery. At present, this source of underground water is very important because it is the origin of a social organization with deep cultural roots. Moreover, it is a source of economic income when used in agriculture and in other productive activities. However, the increasing and enlarging of the galleries in this valley from the middle of the twentieth century have caused a reduction of the infiltration coefficients and, consequently, a lowering of the water table. Nevertheless, at present this system has shown to be important for the economic and social development of the villages.
