A proposition: Megadoses of vitamin C are valuable in the treatment of cancer

Classical counterviews on the utility of vitamin C megadoses for treating cancer patients are presented by the principal promoter of high-dose vitamin C therapy (Linus Pauling), and the Director of the Mayo Clinic's Department of Medical Oncology (Charles Moertel). Pauling argues that a daily high vitamin C dosage, given to cancer patients as an adjunct to conventional therapy, improves the general health of almost all, somewhat increases survival time, and has great benefit to some. Pauling cites case studies and published reports. Moertel summarizes the results of Mayo Clinic studies designed to test these claims, via a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind experimental design, concluding that survival curves of vitamin C-treated and placebo-treated terminal cancer patients were essentially identical, and that treatment duration in advanced cancer patients made no difference. The limitations of data in Pauling's studies also are cited.(wz)
