Dates
1983
Dates can grow in desert areas if some water is available; they have always been an important food source in the Middle East. A brief history about the importance of dates is recounted. Dates are eaten fresh, but their natural sugar content makes them a good traveling companion. Dates are high in protein, fat, and minerals. There are 3 varieties: soft, juicy, high in sugar dates (the most popular); hard, dry dates (preferred by Arabs); and inferior, fibrous, low in sugar dates which do not keep well. Climate factors which affect date production are discussed. (kbc)
