Streamlining and implementing nutritional assessment: The dietary approach
An historical perspective is given on the development of dietary inquiry methods. No short method has yet been devised that can provide reliable information about the present or long-term diet of an individual. Limitations in time and methodology may be overcome to some extent, however, by streamlining the dietary component of nutritional assessment, as follows: 1) using a screening and referral system to identify high-risk patients; 2) sharing assessment tasks with paraprofessionals; and 3) using shortcuts to summarize and assess diets. Forms, techniques, and tools which may be used in the screening and dietary assessment process are described.
