High dietary zinc to copper ratio may be a contributing factor to coronary heart disease. Changes in blood levels of zinc and copper as an effect of the use of oral contraceptive agents make additional study of maintenance of the recommended zinc-copper ratios essential. Twenty women were selected for a study of nutrient utilization and the effects of zinc on copper retention. Dietary level of zinc had no effect on copper retention. Serum levels of copper decreased and zinc increased in insignificant proportions in this study. Copper retention may be altered in subjects being given therapeutic amounts of zinc for relatively short periods of time.
