Vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors in gram-negative septicemia

Measurement of partial thromboplastin times (PTT) and prothrombin times (PT) in 16 children with gram-negative septicemia (Meningococcus, Hemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella-Aerobacter, and Salmonella) revealed that 10 of the children had abnormal PTT and PT values, due to a reduction in vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors. These abnormal coagulation results were not specific for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) (a well-known compilation of gram-negative septicemia in humans); a significant number of the children had a non-DIC coagulopathy. Evidence was found that indicated that an endotoxin may interfere with the vitamin K carboxylation reaction. (wz)
