Diet and weight loss: Their effect on norepinephrine renin and aldosterone levels
1985
Grossman, E. | Eshkol, A. | Rosenthal, T.
A study assessed the effect of a low-calorie diet on norepinephrine (NE) and blood pressure in 22 hypertensive obese patients (8 females, 14 males; ages 20-64 (mean, 39 years)). All patients evidenced a significant decrease in blood pressure after 10 days, while most (29) evidenced a significant NE decline. A significant decrease also occurred in plasma renin activity (PRA) which was somewhat related to changes in NE and aldosterone. It is suggested that a reduced activity of the sympathetic nervous system caused by caloric intake restriction may effect a reduction in blood pressure. Two of the 22 patients experienced an extreme NE elevation that remained high 6 months later. (wz)
