Study of Livelihood Security through Migratory Sheep Rearing in Hill Economy: A Case Study of Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh

Rearing of sheep plays an important role in the economy of hill farmers, as it provides livelihood security to them. This paper has studied the livelihood security through income and employment of the households rearing migratory sheep in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It was observed that rearing of migratory sheep provides good employment opportunities. The employment status of the migratory sheep farmers was for 1098 person-days per annum on small farms and 1307 person-days per annum on large farms. The income over input costs was 233 per sheep on small farms and 242 on large farms. The per farm net income over input cost was around 162 thousand. The status of food security, compared to the norms recommended by the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, indicated that consumption of cereals, milk, sugar and fat and oils was more than the quantity required. The consumption of pulses and meat, vegetables and fruits was substantially lower than the required norms.
