Forty-five hyperlipoproteinemic patients were treated for 2 weeks with lipid-lowering diets using 7 different daily menus of identical composition at all energy levels. The fat and protein content of the diets provided 34-35% and 20% of the energy, respectively; the dietary polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratios ranged from 1.3-2.0; the cholesterol content was 0.14 g per 6.7 MJ. Under these lipid-lowering isoenergetic dietary conditions, the patients showed decreases of 27-33% in very low density lipoprotein triglycerides, 16-19% in low density lipoprotein, and 5-13% in high density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared with patient levels observed during a preceding 2-week period on a control diet. Since no changes were observed in lipoprotein removal capacity, it was concluded that the observed effects were primarily due to a reduced production of serum lipoproteins. (wz)
