Toxicity of pesticide residues to a beneficial arthropod, Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot) is a predatory mite used to control the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Koch). Since the beginning of the 1970s, the predatory mite has been mass-released in greenhouses where pesticides have been previously sprayed to control various pests (Fungi, Acarina, or Insecta). Residues of these treatments are sometimes toxic to P. persimilis, precluding its expected beneficial action. We present a method to estimate the effects of residue from one pesticide in a situation where several pesticides are used concomitantly. We estimated the residual toxicity of 27 commonly used pesticides and expressed them as thresholds for P. persimilis. These thresholds correspond with the number of days after treatment when the pesticide remains toxic for P. persimilis and therefore correspond with the optimal time before release of the predaceous mite after a pesticide treatment.
