A study evaluated the effectiveness of a Tanzanian hospital-based nutrition rehabilitation program in terms of mortality, relapse rate, and nutritional status of 87% of 647 children treated for severe malnutrition and followed-up for over a year after hospital discharge. Of these, 75% remained in good health status with notable weight (but not height) catch-up. Mortality incidence, malnutrition relapses, and incidence of residual clinical malnutrition signs in this population were 8%, 13% and 4%, respectively. The weight for height (W/H) ratio at discharge was not found to be a predictor of the results.(wz)
